Just a reminder that the animal kingdom can be a brutal place…
This zebra seemed to be having a pretty bad day in Kruger National Park.
As two crocs grab a hold of it, it struggles to free its leg from their grip. Not giving up, the zebra is able to escape. Unfortunately, it does have what looks to be a pretty bad cut. But its fellow zebras surround it for protection.
While some people’s first instinct would be to help the zebra after it is attacked, it would be ill advised (as well as against park policy) to provide medical help, unless it is for special circumstances.
While zebras are prey to lions, hyenas, dogs, leopards and cheetahs, they do have some characteristics that allow them to have a chance against these skilled predators. Zebras have good eyesight and researchers believe that they can even see in color. The location of their eyes on the sides of their head give the animal a wide range of view to see upcoming danger. They even have night vision, but unfortunately not as good as the night vision of most predator species.
Even zebra hearing is superior, with large, rounded ears that can turn in multiple direction.
