Rainbow Tree: Surreal Colored Trees

Have you ever seen such a colorful tree?!

Known as the rainbow eucalyptus (or Eucalyptus deglupta), this surreal tree looks something like an artist’s creation. Believe it or not, though, this coloring is a natural response to the tree’s constant growth.

The beautiful and unique color patterns appear as the tree’s bark is continuously shed. When the outermost patches of bark fall off, a bright green layer is exposed. Over time, the green bark matures into brilliant shades of blue, purple, orange, and finally maroon.

Not only are they insanely beautiful, these magnificent trees are impressive in size and grow up to 200 feet tall and 6 feet wide!

These trees thrive in tropical forests that get large amounts of rain, and can be found throughout New Britain, New Guinea, Indonesia, and frost-free zones of the United States (especially Hawaii).

Degluptas are grown in plantations all over the world to make pulpwood and white paper. They’re also cultivated as ornamental trees to add color and vibrance to landscapes.
