Sometimes people make terrible decisions. Some of those people take is a step further and post them on social media.
This was indeed the case for two men who bragged about “surfing” on an endangered species last week on Fraser Island.
Ricky Rogers of Queensland, Australia proudly posted this image on Facebook, writing: “Surfed a tortoise on zee weekend.. gnarly, dude.”
Had they paid attention in biology, they would know that this is not actually a tortoise; It’s a federally protected and very endangered sea turtle.
A fellow Facebook user saw the unfortunate post and began circulating it around social media. “Share this around and let’s see if we can get this fool a nice hefty fine,” the user wrote in a post.
Staff at the RSPCA were appalled by the post, stating, “These guys are just complete idiots — there’s no way they should be doing what they were doing.”
Queensland officials are looking further into the matter, and the men may face a sizable fine.
Hats off to those who respect wildlife and encourage others to do the same.
