When a small, helpless frog leaps into the web of a huge, hungry orb-weaver spider, you’d expect the frog to be lunch. After all, spiders don’t just eat insects, they will eat anything that they can catch in their webs, from snakes to birds. For the frog, there is seemingly no hope.
But the frog is not as helpless as it seems. When the spider investigates and tastes the frog, it realizes the frog is toxic and, thus, inedible.
With no reason to kill or eat the frog, the spider climbs back down and starts untangling the frog from its web.
When the frog is free, it drops to the ground, and the spider patches its web. While it may seem like the spider is showing compassion, the spider is actually looking out for itself. By sparing the frog, it conserves energy and venom, and by freeing the frog, it keeps its web free of unwanted creatures that interfere with capturing edible prey.
