This Is Africa’s Most Photographed Bird

This is probably the most photographed bird in South Africa, and it’s easy to see why!

It is officially known as the Lilac-breasted Roller, although Rainbow Bird seems a more appropriate name!

This colorful bird is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula. It prefers open woodland and savanna and is largely absent from treeless places. Usually found alone or in pairs, the roller perches at the tops of trees, poles or other high vantage points from where it can spot insects, lizards, scorpions, snails, small birds and rodents moving about at ground level. Perching in these conspicuous heights allows the bird to pose for the camera as well.
