A female coyote that was found on the brink of death after being shot between the eyes has made an incredible comeback. Not only did she survive the ordeal, just one month later, she gave birth to five healthy pups.

Rescuers found the coyote, now referred to as “Angel”, at the bottom of an empty California reservoir in February. They suspect that she had wandered for days, even weeks, before falling into the reservoir.

She was initially not expected to survive, and was nearly lost during the rescue attempt. She went into cardiac arrest as rescuers pulled her out of the reservoir, but her will to live was strong. After a shot of epinephrine and a series of chest compressions, she started to respond by lifting her head. This tenacious animal held on for the transport to veterinary hospital and the weeks of recovery at the rehabilitation center where she currently resides.

Now we know why her will was so strong: Only one month later, on March 23, she gave birth to five healthy puppies! The pups will be cared for and released when they are old enough to survive on their own. As for Angel, the rehabilitator currently caring for her is trying to get a permit that will allow the impressive coyote to remain on her premises to serve a surrogate mother for abandoned pups.
