Pelican Becomes Man’s Best Friend

Sorry, dogs. But this pelican is taking your spot as man’s best friend.

Bigbird the pelican was separated from this flock during a storm. He was taken in by Jeffrey, the manager at a safari camp. Jeffrey took him under his wing and the pair fished with each other each day, forming an unlikely friendship.

Great White pelicans typically hunt together in a flock, putting Bigbird at a pretty big disadvantage after losing his family. So Jeffrey and the staff at his safari camp took matters into their own hand and tried to teach the lonely bird to fish. And Bigbird treated the camp as his flock, and followed Jeffrey everywhere, including on fishing trips in his kayak.

Jeffrey describes Bigbird as optimistic, often opening his mouth and sticking it in the water off the side of a kayak, hoping a fish just wanders in.

“He hasn’t got the rest of his flock to help him out with fishing. We’re gunna spend as much time with him in the water and he’ll get the idea,” Jeffrey explains in the video.

All of that optimism and fishing practice must have paid off, because against all odds, Bigbird manages to catch a fish all by himself.
