Biologists in Florida recently trapped a rare, giant alligator snapping turtle — weighing in at whopping 100 pounds!
The massive creature was a Suwanee alligator snapping turtle, Macrochelys suwanniensis, which is a new species of snapping turtle that biologists first discovered in 2014.
The find was even more unusual as this river was a blackwater stream, which are lower in nutrients and known for low biological productivity. Finding such large turtles here is quite exceptional.
The FWC shared the photos in a post on Facebook:
This week our biologists were out checking traps set for the Suwannee alligator snapping turtle, Macrochelys…
Alligator snapping turtles possess some unbelievable powerful jaws, capable of crushing a pineapple with ease (watch that here).
