This is why you don’t want to mess with a buffalo.

Tourists got the thrill of their lives while filming this awe-inspiring event in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Two lions had been seen stalking a buffalo for almost an hour when one of them finally made a move and brought the colossal buffalo to the ground. It seemed like it was all over for this formidable beast, but the buffalo had luck on his side.

Noticing a member of its herd was in danger, a fellow buffalo quickly stepped in to defend his injured comrade. He effortlessly picked up and tossed the lion — not once, but twice — in an effort to shoo it away.

It appeared to have worked, as the lion ran off into the bushes to avoid further confrontation. Surprisingly, all of the animals walked away with no major injuries.

African buffalo can weigh up to 2,200 pounds and are considered a very dangerous animals. In fact, buffalo are sometimes known as “widowmakers” and kill an estimated 200 people every year in Africa. Hunters are wary of the formidable beasts — buffaloes injured by hunters often ambush and attack their human predators.

The incredible footage was captured by Ian Matheson, 52, during an early morning game drive with his son Oliver. He and Oliver were on safari in the Mjejane Reserve on the border of the Kruger Park.
